Publication on Book of Reflexology

In January 2020 Harmony published 5000 copies of its first book titled ‘Reflexology: Theory and Practice’  (ISBN 978-984-34-7778-1). The book is authored jointly by SyedaShahida Sultana and AmitabhaBhattacharjee, who donated their royalty to Harmony for the purpose of research on Reflexology and promotion of the method among the marginalized people of the country. The book appeared in EkusheBoimelaof 2020 at Dhaka, where publishing house ‘Creative Dhaka’ was the distributor.

The book has four chapters. Description of Reflexology, History of scientific evolution and Rational from the perspective of individuals and sector formed content of the first chapter. The second one contains theories about how Reflexology works, instructions for application in prevention and control of diseases by maintaining safety and efficacy, and answers to FAQs about Reflexology. Pictorial description of the reflex points is presented in Chapter 3 to help readers finding those easily. The 4th chapter contains definition of health, root causes of diseases and general guidelines for life style modification.

Based on a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed between Center for Natural Resource Studies (CNRS) and Harmony on 12 October 2019, publication of the book was sponsored by an exploratory research project titled ‘Reducing Dietary Related Risks associated with Non-Communicable Diseases in Bangladesh (RDRNCD)’. The project was funded by International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada and led by CNRS in association with Institute of Nutrition and food science, Department of Sociology and Department of Public Administration of University of Dhaka; Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI); University of Manitoba, Canada and Channel-I.

The Community of Yoga Professionals in Bangladesh

In June 2020, Harmony has established the ‘Community of Yoga Professionals in Bangladesh’. Purpose of this strategic intervention is to harness the potential contribution of Yoga to health, wellness and people-centered health care. Membership of the Community (https://www.facebook.com/groups/httpsharmonybd.org) is only for the Bangladeshi nationals with professional certification and minimum 3 years of professional experience in the field of Yoga. Targeted supports from Harmony to the community includes:

  1. creation of opportunities for peer learning through exchange of experiential lessons among the members;
  2. accumulation of evidences that proves effectiveness of Yoga-therapy in management of health issues.
  3. increase member’s access to higher studies/ trainings on Yoga Therapy;
  4. advocacy for incorporation of yoga therapy into relevant policies, programs and regulations of national and primary health care in Bangladesh; and
  5. attract resources and supports to growth of yoga sector in Bangladesh.

Civil Society Sensitization

In between 16th February and 4th March of 2020, Harmony extended its efforts for drawing greater attention of Civil Society Organizations (CSO) on the issues around prevention and control of NCDs by using Traditional/Complementary/Alternative Medicine like Reflexology. In doing so, in collaboration with six (6) CSOs Harmony organized six (6) Dialogues in Bandarban , Barisal, Barguna, Dhaka and Rangamati. All together 122 discussants took part in those dialogues.

Police Officer’s Orientation on Management of Stress and common health issues

In 2019 and 2020, through interactive 64 sessions, the team of Harmony oriented all together 2,315 Police Officers of different hierarchy (ranging from Sub-Inspector to Additional DIG) on application of Reflexology, Acupressure & Pranayama in management of Stress and various common health problems. The sessions were organized in Forensic Training Institute, Detective Training School and Cyber Training Centre under CID; and in Police Training Centre at Mohera, Tangail.

Vocational Training and Self-employment support to the slum children involved in hazardous job

In February 2020, Harmony completed its vocational training and self-employment support to the first batch of children living in slums at Mohammadpur and Sabujbag of Dhaka City. Altogether 10 children started the Reflexology Therapist Training (RTT) program, six of whom accomplished certification from Harmony at the end. Three out of the six graduated children has already started earning as self-employed Reflexology Therapists. Ain o Salish Kendro (ASK) referred the children, who were among the selected beneficiaries of a MJF supported project on Child Labor.
