Study on Advancing Gender Equity in Bangladesh’s Fisheries Sector

Between January and March 2025, a three-member Team Harmony conducted the qualitative study “Beyond the Nets: Advancing Gender Equity in Bangladesh’s Fisheries Sector” under the EU-funded Empowering Women Through Civil Society Actors in Bangladesh (EWCSA) program, commissioned by CNRS. The research examined systemic exclusion of women fisherfolk in inland and estuarine fisheries across Chandpur, Sunamganj, and Satkhira, analyzing their roles, contributions, and barriers such as policy gaps, patriarchal norms, climate change, and gender-based violence. Combining focus group discussions with women fisherfolk and key informant interviews (fisheries officials, community leaders, local government, journalists, CSOs), and secondary data analysis (academic journals, grey literature), the study informed a validated policy brief advocating gender-transformative reforms, endorsed by stakeholders at local and national levels.
